About cefepime
Cefepime is an antibiotic that kills bacteria causing infections. Patients may have tests to monitor kidney or liver function while receiving this medicine.
Possible side effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Feeling lightheaded
- Blurry vision
- Liver problems
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, or swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients who take cefepime will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tips for families
- Discuss all questions and instructions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Tell a doctor if severe diarrhea occurs while taking this medicine.
- Cefepime may affect some lab tests, especially in patients with high blood sugar. Talk to the care team about using urine glucose test strips.
- Inform the doctor if the patient is pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
- Finish all prescribed doses, even if symptoms improve.
- Store liquid cefepime for IV use in the refrigerator. Remove and allow it to reach room temperature for an hour before giving by IV.
- If a dose is missed, give it as soon as possible unless it is near the next dose. Do not give two doses at the same time.
- Do not use after the expiration date and follow instructions for storage and disposal.
