About ceftriaxone
Ceftriaxone is an antibiotic that works to kill bacteria that cause infections. Patients may have tests to monitor kidney or liver function while receiving this medicine.
Ceftriaxone at home
- Store liquid ceftriaxone (for IV use) in a refrigerator. Remove the dose about an hour before use and place at room temperature before giving by IV.
- Give a missed dose as soon as possible. If it is near the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not give 2 doses at the same time.
- Do not use the medicine past the expiration date.
- Follow instructions for safe storage and disposal.
Possible side effects
- Diarrhea
- Irritation at the injection site
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients who take ceftriaxone will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tips for families
- Discuss all questions and instructions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Let a doctor know right away if severe diarrhea occurs while taking this medicine.
- Ceftriaxone may affect certain lab tests, especially in patients with high blood sugar. Talk to the care team about using urine glucose test strips.
- Tell the doctor if the patient is pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- Finish all doses exactly as instructed, even if symptoms improve.
