What is cladribine?
Cladribine is an anticancer medicine given as a clear liquid into a vein (IV). Caregivers should follow safety precautions while handling the medicine and patient body fluids for 48 hours after it is given.
Possible late effects
- Fever
- Lower blood counts 10 to 14 days after treatment
- Decreased kidney and liver function
Possible side effects
- Nausea
- Rash and itching
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients who take cladribine will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions and instructions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- This medicine may increase infection risk; avoid crowds and people who are sick.
- The doctor may prescribe medicine to help prevent nausea and vomiting after receiving cladribine.
- Caregivers should follow safety instructions and wear appropriate protection when handling patient body fluids for 48 hours after treatment.
