What is clobazam?

Clobazam is used to treat certain types of seizures and may be prescribed for other reasons. It is available as 10 mg and 20 mg tablets and a liquid suspension taken by mouth.

Clobazam at home

  • Take with or without food; take with food if stomach upset occurs.
  • If tablets are mixed with food or drink, take immediately and do not store for later use.
  • Shake the liquid suspension well before use and measure doses with an oral syringe.
  • Follow the doctor's instructions for tapering if the medicine needs to be discontinued.

Possible side effects

  • Clumsiness, trouble with coordination, or weakness
  • Constipation
  • Feeling dizzy, drowsy, or sleepy
  • Drooling
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Cough
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching or hives, swelling of the face or hands, swelling or tingling of the mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing, rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, or swelling of the face or neck
  • Seek immediate medical help for shortness of breath, changes in balance, confusion, seizures that worsen, extreme tiredness or weakness, painful urination, slurred speech, insomnia, severe dizziness, fainting, severe drowsiness, blistering or peeling rash, extreme mood changes, hallucinations, or thoughts of self-harm
  • Not all patients who take clobazam will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.

Tips for patients and families

  • Tell all health care providers that you are taking this medicine.
  • Inform the doctor right away if you become pregnant or are breastfeeding.
  • Some medicines can affect how clobazam works; discuss all medicines including fluconazole, fluvoxamine, omeprazole, ticlopidine, and hormone-based contraceptives.
  • Birth control pills may be less effective; use an additional method such as condoms for 28 days after stopping clobazam.
  • Clobazam may be habit-forming with long-term use; do not change the dose or stop suddenly without medical advice.
  • Avoid tasks requiring alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Talk to the doctor before taking other medicines or products that may slow your actions.
