What is efavirenz?
Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used to treat HIV infection. It slows disease progression but does not cure HIV. It is available as 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg capsules, and a liquid form may also be used.
Efavirenz at home
- Take once daily, usually at bedtime, every day.
- May be taken with or without food; taking after a meal may reduce food effects.
- Follow the care team's instructions for liquid preparation if used.
Possible side effects
- Headache
- Unusual dreams
- Dizziness or drowsiness
- Trouble concentrating
- Diarrhea
- Rash
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Store capsules and liquid at room temperature.
- Women must avoid pregnancy while taking efavirenz; use effective birth control and add a second method if using oral contraceptives.
- Review potential drug interactions (e.g., clarithromycin, indinavir, oral contraceptives, rifabutin, saquinavir, rifampin, St. John's wort) with the care team.
- Inform providers about all new medicines started while taking efavirenz.
