Eltrombopag

Hematopoietic Agent; Thrombopoietic Agent
Often used for: Treating low platelet counts, immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), aplastic anemia

What is eltrombopag?

Eltrombopag helps the body make platelets to support normal blood clotting. It treats immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), where the immune system attacks platelets, and may also be used for aplastic anemia. Routine tests may monitor liver function and eyesight.

Eltrombopag at home

  • Take once daily at the same time each day.
  • Doses may be adjusted based on response; always read the prescription label for the correct dose.
  • Tablets: take on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after dairy, minerals, supplements, or antacids (e.g., calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc).
  • Swallow tablets whole without crushing, chewing, or breaking.
  • Oral suspension: prepare with the supplied device and a small amount of water; do not reuse syringes.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible unless it is near the next dose; do not double doses.
  • Store at room temperature and keep in the original bottle.

Possible side effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Increase in liver enzymes
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Abdominal (belly) pain
  • Serious effects: liver problems, yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, right upper stomach pain, unusual tiredness, swelling, symptoms of blood clots (pain or swelling in limbs, vision changes, confusion, trouble speaking, burning, numbness, tingling)
  • Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, fever, chills, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, dizziness, low blood pressure, pain in the chest, side, or back, swelling of the face or neck
  • Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Avoid multivitamins, supplements containing calcium, or antacids unless directed by your doctor.
  • Review all medicines with the care team to avoid interactions.
  • Patients of Asian ancestry may need a lower dose; inform your doctor.
  • Tell the care team if you are sexually active, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Eltrombopag may reduce effectiveness of hormone-based birth control; use additional contraception such as condoms.
