What is enalapril?

Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels to control high blood pressure, helping protect the kidneys, heart, and brain. It is available as 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg tablets, a 0.1 mg/mL oral liquid, and an IV formulation.

Possible side effects

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting spells
  • Cough
  • Low blood pressure
  • Decreased kidney function with reduced urine output
  • Feeling tired
  • Low blood counts with higher infection, bleeding, or anemia risk
  • High potassium levels
  • Headache
  • Swelling of face, lips, or tongue
  • Breathing or swallowing problems
  • Hoarse or tight throat
  • Swelling of legs or ankles
  • Rash
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
  • Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.

  • Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Follow the care team's instructions for blood pressure and lab monitoring.
  • Report signs of swelling, breathing difficulty, or persistent cough immediately.
