What is etravirine?
Etravirine is an NNRTI used to manage HIV infection. It slows disease progression but does not cure HIV. Tablets contain 100 mg.
Etravirine at home
- Take one tablet in the morning and one at night as prescribed.
- Always take with food.
- Follow care team instructions if dissolving tablets prior to dosing.
Possible side effects
- Rash
- Feeling more tired than usual
- Low blood counts
- Headache
- Nausea
- High blood cholesterol
- High blood glucose
- Increased liver function tests
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Store tablets at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
- Tablets may be dissolved in a small amount of water if swallowing is difficult.
- Attend clinic visits for blood tests to monitor side effects such as low blood counts.
