What is famciclovir?

Famciclovir treats herpes virus infections such as shingles, cold sores, or genital herpes, especially in immunocompromised patients. Blood tests may monitor counts and liver/kidney function; dosing may change based on results.

Famciclovir at home

  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or hazardous activities until you know how it affects you.
  • Can be taken with or without food.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible unless near the next dose; do not double doses.
  • Store at room temperature and do not use past the expiration date.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Rash, itching, or hives
  • Diarrhea
  • Low blood counts (infection, bleeding, anemia, fatigue)
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Changes in liver function (ALT/AST/bilirubin increases)
  • Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of face or neck
  • Not all patients experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Tablets contain lactose; inform the care team if lactose intolerant.
  • Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Complete the full course as instructed.
