What is famciclovir?
Famciclovir treats herpes virus infections such as shingles, cold sores, or genital herpes, especially in immunocompromised patients. Blood tests may monitor counts and liver/kidney function; dosing may change based on results.
Famciclovir at home
- May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or hazardous activities until you know how it affects you.
- Can be taken with or without food.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible unless near the next dose; do not double doses.
- Store at room temperature and do not use past the expiration date.
Possible side effects
- Nausea and vomiting
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain
- Fatigue or weakness
- Rash, itching, or hives
- Diarrhea
- Low blood counts (infection, bleeding, anemia, fatigue)
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- Changes in liver function (ALT/AST/bilirubin increases)
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of face or neck
- Not all patients experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Tablets contain lactose; inform the care team if lactose intolerant.
- Tell your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Complete the full course as instructed.
