What is pemetrexed?

Pemetrexed is an anticancer medicine administered by IV infusion. It can pose handling risks for caregivers, and patient body fluids may contain the drug for 48 hours after dosing.

Pemetrexed at home

  • Follow anti-nausea and supportive care guidance.
  • Report severe side effects immediately.
  • Handle body fluids with care for 48 hours after each dose.

Possible side effects

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation
  • Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling, trouble breathing)
  • Severe skin rash
  • Urinary changes or decreased output
  • Mouth sores
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, body aches
  • Rapid weight gain or swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Red or dark brown urine
  • Not all patients experience these side effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all questions with the doctor or pharmacist.
  • Do not take pemetrexed if pregnant; use effective birth control during therapy.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking pemetrexed.
  • Some NSAIDs interact with pemetrexed; review all medicines with the care team.
  • Avoid vaccines unless approved by the doctor.
  • Take prescribed folic acid and vitamin B-12 supplementation.
  • Follow steroid premedication instructions.
