What is pentamidine?
Pentamidine is an antifungal medication used to prevent or treat Pneumocystis pneumonia, especially in patients who cannot take sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Patients receive routine monitoring for blood counts, glucose, electrolytes, and organ function.
Possible side effects
- Injection: nausea, loss of appetite, metallic taste, skin irritation, rash, low blood pressure, blood sugar changes, heart rhythm changes, liver problems, allergic reactions, pancreatitis
- Inhaled: cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, metallic taste, throat irritation, hoarseness, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, headache, night sweats, fever
- Not all patients experience these side effects. Report any symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss all instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Prophylactic inhaled doses are usually given every 3–4 weeks.
- Inform the care team if pregnant or breastfeeding.
