What is phosphorus?
Phosphorus is an essential mineral. Staff check blood levels to identify hypophosphatemia (low phosphorus) or hyperphosphatemia (high phosphorus) and adjust medicines or fluids accordingly.
Possible side effects
- Hypophosphatemia: muscle weakness or numbness, confusion, seizures, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting
- Hyperphosphatemia: muscle spasms, kidney failure, low calcium
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss questions with the care team.
- Follow instructions for dissolving Neutra Phos® packets in at least 30 mL of liquid.
- Notify the care team if you suspect symptoms of low phosphorus.
