What is posaconazole?
Posaconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat or prevent infections such as aspergillosis and candidiasis, especially in immunocompromised patients. Blood levels and organ function are monitored regularly.
Posaconazole at home
- Tablets may be taken with or without food; swallow whole.
- Oral suspension should be shaken well and taken as instructed, preferably with a high-fat meal or acidic drink if advised.
- Use the provided measuring device for liquids.
- Give missed doses as soon as possible unless it is near the next dose. Do not double.
- Store at room temperature and follow disposal instructions.

- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Liver problems
- Mouth sores
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue or weakness
- Dizziness or headache
- Fever, chills, increased sweating
- Cough
- Joint, muscle, or back pain
- Swelling of hands, legs, or feet
- Rash or itching
- Sleep problems
- Fast heart rate or rhythm changes
- Low magnesium or potassium
- Blood pressure changes
- Kidney problems
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Follow guidance on taking with food and timing of blood level tests.
- Do not switch dosage forms without medical advice.
- Inform the care team about all medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
- Use birth control during treatment and for 6 months after therapy.
- Inform the care team if sexually active, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
- Finish all prescribed doses and do not exceed recommendations.
