About rasburicase
Rasburicase lowers uric acid levels caused by tumor lysis or certain cancer treatments. Patients may be screened for G6PD deficiency before therapy and monitored for allergic reactions.
Possible side effects
- Nausea or vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Skin irritation or rash
- Headache
- Fever or sore throat
- Mouth sores
- Allergic reactions (fever, rash, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sore throat, cough, chest pain, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, hives)
- Red blood cell problems (hemolysis, methemoglobinemia)
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss all recommendations with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Patients with G6PD deficiency should not receive rasburicase.
- Inform the care team if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Seek immediate help for signs of serious blood disorders.
