What is sucralfate?
Sucralfate coats the stomach lining to protect it from acid and promote healing of ulcers. It is available as tablets and suspension.
Possible side effects
- Constipation
- Gas
- Stomach pain
- Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck)
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Take sucralfate four times daily on an empty stomach (1 hour before meals and at bedtime).
- Sucralfate can interact with many medicines; take other medicines 2 hours before or after sucralfate unless directed otherwise.
- Shake the suspension well before each dose.
- Do not use beyond the expiration date.
