What is sugammadex?

Sugammadex reverses the effects of certain neuromuscular blockers used during surgery or intubation, allowing faster recovery of muscle function.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain at injection site
  • Low blood pressure
  • Headache
  • Allergic reactions (itching, hives, flushing, swelling, fast heart rate, trouble breathing)
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for patients and families

  • Sugammadex is administered by healthcare professionals with close monitoring.
  • Use additional birth control for 7 days after receiving sugammadex because hormone-based birth control may be less effective.
  • Discuss breastfeeding concerns with the doctor.
