What is tenofovir?
Tenofovir is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate antiviral that slows HIV disease progression. It is taken once daily with food.
Possible side effects
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Stomach pain
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck)
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss instructions with the care team.
- Store tablets at room temperature.
- Attend regular clinic visits for blood tests.
- Take once daily with food.
