What is thioguanine?

Thioguanine is an oral chemotherapy drug that slows or stops cancer cell growth. Genetic testing may guide dosing to reduce toxicity.

Possible long-term effects

  • Second cancers

Thioguanine at home

  • Take at the same time each day.
  • If a dose is missed and the next dose is due within 12 hours, skip the missed dose.
  • Store tablets at room temperature; shake liquid well and discard syringes after use.
  • Do not use past the expiration date.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Low blood counts
  • Liver problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mouth sores
  • Tumor lysis syndrome
  • Mild swelling or bloating
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for families

  • Discuss instructions with the care team.
  • Protect skin from sunlight with sunscreen and protective clothing.
  • Use birth control during treatment and for the recommended period afterward.
  • Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Caregivers should avoid contact with patient body fluids for 48 hours after dosing.
