What is thioguanine?
Thioguanine is an oral chemotherapy drug that slows or stops cancer cell growth. Genetic testing may guide dosing to reduce toxicity.
Possible long-term effects
- Second cancers
Thioguanine at home
- Take at the same time each day.
- If a dose is missed and the next dose is due within 12 hours, skip the missed dose.
- Store tablets at room temperature; shake liquid well and discard syringes after use.
- Do not use past the expiration date.
Possible side effects
- Nausea or vomiting
- Low blood counts
- Liver problems
- Loss of appetite
- Mouth sores
- Tumor lysis syndrome
- Mild swelling or bloating
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss instructions with the care team.
- Protect skin from sunlight with sunscreen and protective clothing.
- Use birth control during treatment and for the recommended period afterward.
- Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Caregivers should avoid contact with patient body fluids for 48 hours after dosing.
