What is topotecan?
Topotecan is a topoisomerase inhibitor that slows cancer cell division. It can be given by mouth or IV and requires frequent monitoring of blood counts and organ function.
Topotecan at home
- Take oral doses once daily as prescribed; store liquid or capsules in the refrigerator protected from light.
- Give missed doses as soon as possible unless near the next dose; do not double.
- If vomiting occurs after an oral dose, do not repeat the dose; contact the care team.
- Dispose of syringes after each use.
Possible side effects
- Diarrhea (early or delayed)
- Low blood counts
- Liver problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Fatigue or weakness
- Flu-like symptoms
- Dehydration
- Hair loss
- Constipation
- Mouth sores
- Lung problems
- IV site irritation
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss all instructions with the care team.
- Report diarrhea promptly.
- Use birth control during treatment and for 6 months afterward.
- Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Caregivers should wear gloves and avoid contact with body fluids for 48 hours after dosing.
