What is trametinib?
Trametinib is a MEK inhibitor that blocks tumor growth in cancers with specific mutations. It is often used with dabrafenib.
Trametinib at home
- Take at the same time daily on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after eating).
- Store tablets in the refrigerator protected from light.
- If a dose is missed and the next dose is more than 12 hours away, take the missed dose; otherwise skip it.
- Do not double doses.
Possible side effects
- Skin rash or dry skin
- Diarrhea
- Swelling or lymphedema
- Itching
- Mouth sores
- Acne
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Nail changes
- Eye problems
- Lung problems
- Bleeding
- High blood sugar or blood pressure
- GI problems
- Liver problems
- Second skin cancers
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss all instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Monitor skin for new lesions and report changes.
- Use birth control during treatment and for 4 months after the last dose.
- Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Caregivers should handle tablets carefully and avoid contact with body fluids.
