What is valproic acid?
Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant available in multiple oral forms and as an IV solution. Dosing is titrated gradually and blood levels are monitored.
Valproic acid at home
- Sprinkle capsules may be swallowed whole or sprinkled on soft food and swallowed without chewing.
- Delayed-release tablets and gelatin capsules should be swallowed whole.
- Do not mix syrup with carbonated beverages.
- Take with food if stomach upset occurs.
Possible side effects
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness, drowsiness, or unsteadiness
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Blurred or double vision
- Decreased coordination
- Fatigue or muscle aches
- Agitation or irritability
- Slurred speech
- Tremor
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Skin rash
- Hair loss
- Liver function changes
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Low blood counts
- Sleep problems
- Allergic reactions (fever, rash, swelling, muscle aches)
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss instructions with the care team.
- Do not stop valproic acid abruptly; seizure risk increases.
- Store at room temperature.
- Avoid alcohol and review all medicines for interactions.
- Report any rash immediately.
- Take exactly as directed to maintain stable blood levels.
- Follow missed-dose instructions from the care team.
- Maintain dental hygiene, especially with sprinkle formulations.
- Attend regular liver function tests.
