What is vismodegib?
Vismodegib is a hedgehog pathway inhibitor that blocks cell signaling to slow tumor growth. Blood counts and metabolic function are monitored during therapy.
Possible long-term effects
- Bone growth problems
- Fertility problems
Vismodegib at home
- Take at the same time each day with or without food.
- Swallow capsules whole; do not open or crush.
- Caregivers should wear gloves when handling capsules.
- Store at room temperature.
- If a dose is missed, skip it and resume the next scheduled dose.
Possible side effects
- Fatigue or weakness
- Changes in taste or loss of taste
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Joint pain
- Muscle spasms
- Hair loss
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shortness of breath or cough
- Kidney problems
- Menstrual changes
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.
Tips for families
- Discuss instructions with the care team.
- Use birth control during treatment and for 24 months after completion; male patients should use condoms during treatment and for 3 months after the final dose.
- Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding; wait 24 months after treatment before breastfeeding or donating blood.
- Caregivers should follow safe handling procedures.
