What is vorinostat?

Vorinostat is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that slows cancer cell growth. Patients require frequent monitoring of blood counts, blood glucose, and organ function.

Vorinostat at home

  • Take at the same time each day with food.
  • Swallow capsules whole; do not open or crush.
  • Caregivers should wear gloves when handling.
  • If a dose is missed and remembered the same day, take it promptly; otherwise skip it.
  • Store at room temperature.

Possible side effects

  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in taste
  • Hair loss
  • Chills or fever
  • Muscle spasms
  • Cold-like symptoms
  • Cough
  • Swelling of hands, legs, or feet
  • Low blood counts
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Dry mouth
  • Shortness of breath
  • Itching
  • High blood sugar
  • Liver or kidney problems
  • Heart problems
  • Blood clots
  • Fertility problems
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for families

  • Discuss instructions with the care team.
  • Monitor blood sugar, especially in patients with diabetes.
  • Drink plenty of fluids as directed.
  • Use birth control during treatment and for 6 months afterward.
  • Inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Follow safe handling and disposal procedures for chemotherapy.
